Shell Decanter, 1.4 L

A fan, flat front and back, widening upward from a narrow base, with deep optic ribs running the whole height. The ribs are blown into an optic mould rather than cut, so they are soft-edged and slightly uneven — you can feel the difference against a cut-crystal piece with a fingernail.

They do something to the light that a plain body does not: a red wine breaks into vertical bands of colour rather than sitting as one block. That is the reason to buy it. It is also the reason it is the hardest piece to dry without leaving marks.
